Ah, social media. What’s not to love?

Millions of people Tweet, go Facebook live and post Snapchat selfies on a daily basis. From dating to shopping, to keeping in touch with old friends and everything in between, there’s no shortage of online communication options right in your smartphone.

In honor of Social Media Day, here’s our top 5 social-media innovations.

5. Instagram TV

Instagram TV, also known as IGTV, mixes the best of YouTube and Facebook Watch on one platform.

The June 2018 update offers a new way to watch video for anyone with a smartphone, offering channels of vertical videos that fill a phone screen. Videos can also last up to an hour, unlike the 60-second limit on a traditional Instagram post.

Users can either watch videos from Instagram profiles they follow, or search popular videos others are watching.

Instagram, which was created in 2010, now touts 1 billion followers.

4. Twitter moments

Sometimes issues are complex. Twitter moments help break those down.

The moments feature, which was launched in 2015, allows users to aggregate tweets on a singular topic. Moments typically offer a mix of text, photos and video.

Twitter was born in 2006 and has over 330 million active users.

3. Instagram stories

It seems like Instagram copied the “disappearing story” idea from Snapchat, which launched its story platform in 2013, but it has taken the social-media space by storm.

Insta-story allows users to temporarily photos and videos to their profile. Users can manipulate posts with gifs, polls and location tags, as well as record live video.

Similar to Snapchat, slides disappear after 24 hours. But, a user can “download” the story to his or her profile to create a “highlight.” This story then remains on the profile until the user chooses to take it down.

Insta-story was launched in 2016.

2. Snapchat filters

Snapchat filters have come a long way since the iconic “dog selfie” mode.

Snapchat routinely swaps out filter options, and even creates season-specific options.

Filters now include interactive video options, including a dancing hot dog and a coffee-drinking bitmoji.

In fact, users can create and purchase their own Snapchat filters. Users can use existing templates, or design something original and upload to the app. Prices depend on the filter’s area coverage and how long the filter will be active.

Snapchat was created in 2011.

1. Facebook Live

Many media outlets rely on Facebook live to get information quickly to the public.

Facebook was launched in 2004, and then later introduced live video in 2016.
