KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Entrepreneurs, start-ups, and tech business leaders are in Kansas City this week. The annual Techweek Kansas City event kicked off Monday.

Kansas City is one of nine cities to host the festival-style event. It includes networking opportunities, keynote speakers, and a hiring fair.

Techweek CEO Amanda Signorelli called the week-long event a chance to see the latest and greatest in the tech world while finding inspiration to launch your own project.

One gadget to be featured is FitBark. It’s a device that connects to your dog’s collar. The electronic pod tracks and records data about your dog’s activity and sleep patterns. You can use that data to design the best diet for your pup and keep track of its overall health.

The founder will speak Wednesday. Originally from Italy, the founders started FitBark in New York City but moved their operations to Kansas City which is part of the animal health corridor. More than 300 companies focused on the animal industry are located between Columbia, Missouri and Manhattan, Kansas.

Olathe-based Garmin will also make a presentation. The company recently introduced an activity tracker for kids. The bracelet links to a smartphone app where children can earn points for their activities or completing chores.

Kansas City has established itself as a growing tech hub. GOBankingRates recently named Kansas City in its top 10 cities to start a business. Groups like the Techstars and PlexPod have locations in the metro area to facilitate the tech entrepreneurial spirit.

Somatic Labs took advantage of the Techstars group of engineers to help design the Moment bracelet. It communicates with your brain using vibrations instead of a screen.

Developers designed the device to help the blind but it can be used across the spectrum. For example, the bracelet may vibrate once if your mother calls your smartphone, but twice if your father calls.
